A11yShape, a new prototype tool, breaks that barrier by converting spatial data into formats screen readers can navigate. By combining OpenSCAD’s text-based modeling with GPT-4o’s reasoning, developers can build and verify physical components without needing a sighted colleague to check their work.
For years, visually impaired engineers relied on a tedious game of 'telephone.' Even with code-driven tools like OpenSCAD—which uses scripts instead of mouse clicks—the final designs remained a visual mystery. Programmers wrote the code but couldn’t 'see' the results, forcing dependence on sighted assistants to describe every change. This workflow stifles independence and slows innovation.
A11yShape changes the game by creating a semantic hierarchy of the model. Instead of just outputting shapes, it produces accessible descriptions that screen readers can logically navigate. It uses GPT-4o to validate design choices, acting as a spatial consultant that flags errors or confirms that a 'cube' sits where intended. Led by Liang He at the University of Texas at Dallas, the project grew from a desire to build tools that reflect how blind programmers actually think and code.
Researchers from the University of Texas at Dallas, the University of Washington, and the University of North Texas—including Anhong Guo and Stephanie Ludi—handled the technical heavy lifting. Their work marks a shift in assistive tech: moving beyond simple converters toward tools that foster real professional autonomy.
